Underwriting notes

Underwriting exercises, dated and reviewed

Each note takes one risk, cyber or political, and most often both at once. It says what the file is missing, which signals are kept and which are set aside, then the exercise decision: yes, no, or yes subject to conditions. AlgoPolis insures nothing and carries no risk: the decision is taken as an underwriter would take it, so that it can be reviewed. The note also says what would prove it wrong, and the date on which it will be reviewed against what actually happened.

What these notes commit to

A note decides. It takes a position on a specific risk, with named conditions, and writes it down before knowing whether it is right.

A note gets reviewed. On the date written at the top, it is checked against what happened, and the review is published above the original text, whether it proves the note right or wrong.

The risk is fabricated; the facts are not. No real company is described, while the acts of States, the clauses and the court decisions cited are public and dated. No note recommends any cover, limit, deductible or premium.

Our methodology

The method, in five lines

  1. 01The grid gives a first reading; judgment says where it is wrong, and every departure is written down with its reason.
  2. 02A submission is read first for what it lacks: the questions put to the insured are written before the decision.
  3. 03The decision is yes, no, or yes on named conditions, together with what would prove it wrong.
  4. 04No note recommends a cover, a limit, a deductible or a premium (article L. 511-1 of the French Insurance Code).
  5. 05On the date set, the note is held against the facts, and the review is published above the original text, whether it proves it right or wrong.

Proof of the dates

A decision that could be backdated would prove nothing. Every decided note, in French and in English, is lodged by its SHA-256 fingerprint with an independent timestamping authority (an RFC 3161 token) and with OpenTimestamps. An amendment goes on a new line, the original line never changes, and the numbering is continuous: a removed line would show. The date proven is the token's, which attests that a note existed on that day at the latest.
