World Bank Climate Change Knowledge Portal (CCKP)

Public World Bank portal that serves climate observations and CMIP6 projections under the SSP scenarios, country by country and on a 0.25 degree grid.

Definition

The Climate Change Knowledge Portal, or CCKP, is the World Bank's public climate database, the one its own teams cite in country diagnostics. It serves two datasets on a 0.25 degree grid. On one side, observations from the ERA5 reanalysis, from 1950 onward. On the other, CMIP6 projections, downscaled and bias-corrected, from 1950 to 2100, under five scenarios: SSP1-1.9, SSP1-2.6, SSP2-4.5, SSP3-7.0 and SSP5-8.5. The gridded files are freely available in NetCDF format on the AWS open data registry, and the portal derives aggregates from them by country and by administrative region. On top of that come the Climate Risk Country Profiles, country notes produced on a rolling basis, some of which still rest on CMIP5, and thematic files on tropical cyclones, sea level rise or extreme precipitation. A country risk underwriter uses it to see what weighs on a sovereign or a project: heat stress on an agricultural workforce, drought days in a hydropower basin, the kind of thing that ends up as budget strain or unrest. A catastrophe underwriter checks the trend of a peril there before touching a model. The limit is clear. The portal gives hazard, with no exposure, no vulnerability, no loss curve, and an ensemble median smooths out the very distribution tails that drive a PML. A 0.25 degree cell is about 28 kilometers across at the equator; it sees neither an urban heat island nor a steep valley. A national average for Brazil or India means little for a given site.

Example

Textbook case: a power plant in South Asia cuts output above 35°C, and each day of curtailment costs it 50,000 dollars of margin. The portal shows 20 days above 35°C per year over the reference period and a median of 38 days around mid-century under SSP2-4.5. The expected annual loss rises from 20 × 50,000 = 1.0 million to 38 × 50,000 = 1.9 million dollars, an increase of (1.9 minus 1.0) / 1.0 = 90%. For scale, 0.25 degree of latitude is about 0.25 × 111 = 27.8 kilometers.
