Syndicate in a box
A route into Lloyd's launched in 2019 that lets a new syndicate start with a lighter structure, relying on an existing managing agent, to attract innovative underwriting models.
Syndicate in a box is a scheme launched by Lloyd's in 2019 to make it easier for new syndicates with innovative underwriting models to enter the market. Setting up a conventional syndicate requires an approved managing agent, compliance, actuarial and risk management functions, and capital calibrated on a full business plan: a fixed cost that deters small specialist teams. The scheme lets the newcomer rely on an existing agent's infrastructure and benefit from proportionate rules during its first years, within a size limit, before moving to the ordinary regime. It targets in particular data-driven underwriting, parametric products and emerging risks that existing structures struggle to incubate. For the market, the challenge is that of any established financial center: renewing its offering without weakening the common chain of security, since every new syndicate benefits from the pooling of the Central Fund. The scheme therefore limits its initial scale and makes its growth subject to the Corporation's approval.
Textbook case: a team of five underwriters specializing in parametric insurance for freight delays wants to set up at Lloyd's. Rather than create a managing agent, it starts under this scheme with capped capacity, using an existing agent's compliance and actuarial functions, and will move to the ordinary regime only after demonstrating results.
