Security evacuation cover

Its 5 cross-references, woven across the glossary's 18 categories

Insurance that funds and arranges the evacuation of expatriate employees and their families when a country becomes dangerous, war, unrest, coup, disaster, often triggered by a government advisory to leave.

Definition

A company employing expatriates in unstable countries must be able to get them out quickly if the situation deteriorates. Travel and medical assistance insurance covers repatriation for health reasons, not the evacuation of a healthy person because the surroundings become dangerous. Security evacuation cover fills this gap. It is triggered by a defined event: a recommendation by the home government to leave the country, a declaration of war, expulsion of foreigners, a natural disaster making the area uninhabitable, or the judgment of a security provider. It funds transport to a safe place, temporary accommodation, and often the work of a specialist provider able to arrange a road convoy or a chartered flight when commercial links are cut. The evacuations from Afghanistan in 2021 and Sudan in 2023 showed the model's limits: when airports close within hours, money is no longer enough, and only plans prepared in advance work. The cover is often combined with kidnap and ransom and crisis management covers. For the insurer, it is a highly correlated political risk: one event triggers every policy in a country at once.

Example

Textbook case: a mining group employs forty expatriates in a country where a coup breaks out. Their foreign ministry advises leaving immediately; the airport is closed. The provider appointed by the insurer arranges a road convoy to a neighboring country, then a chartered flight, for 1.1 million euros covered by the policy.
