Science Based Targets Network (SBTN)

Its 5 cross-references, woven across the glossary's 18 categories

A network that since May 2023 has published a method for companies to set and validate quantified targets for freshwater and land.

Definition

For climate, a company can relate its targets to a global carbon budget; for nature there was no common unit, and nature positive pledges remained unverifiable. The SBTN network built a stepwise method: assess one's pressures on nature, prioritize them by location, then set quantified targets on freshwater quantity and quality and on the protection and restoration of land, validated by a third party. It extends to nature what the SBTi does for climate. For insurance, these targets give a measure to the commitments of insured companies, and a basis for the disclosures that the Kunming-Montreal framework and the TNFD call for. Their coverage of biodiversity remains partial.

Example

The network published its first targets for nature on May 24, 2023, tested by seventeen pilot companies; GSK, Kering and Holcim were the first to have targets on freshwater and land validated, and about 60% of pilot companies had some or all of their targets validated.
