Reporting framework for corporate dependencies and impacts on nature and biodiversity, modelled on the climate-focused TCFD.
The Task Force on Nature-related Financial Disclosures proposes a framework for reporting relationships between companies and nature, covering dependencies on ecosystem services, impacts on biodiversity, and the associated risks and opportunities. Published in 2023, the framework extends to natural capital the analytical logic the TCFD introduced for climate. For insurance, biodiversity is a still poorly modelled but material risk: pollinator collapse, soil degradation, loss of wetlands that played a natural flood-protection role. The TNFD methodology rests on a LEAP approach, locate, evaluate, assess, prepare. Its central difficulty lies in the local and multidimensional nature of nature, far less fungible than the tonne of carbon, making aggregation and comparison much more complex than for climate.
An agricultural insurer exposed to pollinator decline can use the TNFD framework to map its insureds' dependence on ecosystem services.
