Unmanned aircraft insurance

Cover for a remotely piloted aircraft, where the value of the device is negligible beside the liability and privacy harm it can cause.

Definition

An unmanned aircraft inverts the usual proportions of aviation insurance: the device is worth a few thousand euros, the liability it can incur runs to millions, and hull cover is almost never the point. Three distinct exposures overlap. Third-party liability on the ground, subject in the Union to compulsory insurance whose minimum amounts derive from the regulation applicable to air carriers. Privacy and data protection, since most devices carry a camera and capturing identifiable images falls under personal data law. And the risk of interference with manned aviation, whose potential severity is out of all proportion to the other two. The European framework classified operations by risk rather than by mass alone, which lets underwriting rest on a verifiable operational declaration rather than on the remote pilot's assertions.

Example

Drone sightings near Gatwick Airport, from 19 to 21 December 2018, closed the airport and canceled more than a thousand flights affecting around 140,000 passengers. Implementing Regulation (EU) 2019/947 on the rules for operating unmanned aircraft has applied since 31 December 2020.
