Ficovie (French life insurance contract register)

Its 5 cross-references, woven across the glossary's 18 categories

A register kept by the French tax administration listing life insurance and capitalization contracts, which notaries can consult to find a deceased person's contracts.

Definition

A life insurance contract passes outside the estate, so heirs and the notary may not know it exists, and the tax authorities may not see it. Ficovie requires every insurer to report to the administration the subscription, surrenders and settlement of contracts, with their value, which makes it a central inventory of the country's contracts. Created to fight tax fraud, it also protects beneficiaries: the notary handling an estate can query it and find a contract nobody was claiming. It thus complements the Eckert law mechanism, which starts from the insurer, with a search that starts from the estate.

Example

Provided for by the French law of December 6, 2013 on fighting tax fraud, Ficovie has operated since January 1, 2016; insurers report to it contracts whose value reaches 7,500 euros on January 1 of each year.
