Therapeutic part-time work

Its 5 cross-references, woven across the glossary's 18 categories

A doctor-prescribed return to work on a part-time basis, during which social security and often the protection policy top up the employee's reduced pay.

Definition

Therapeutic part-time work allows an employee to return gradually to work when their health does not yet allow a full-time return, or when a partial return is likely to aid recovery. The treating doctor prescribes it, the health insurance medical adviser approves it, and the employer must arrange it or justify a refusal. During this period the employee receives pay in proportion to time worked plus social security daily allowances, up to their previous salary. Protection policies generally provide a top-up to bring income close to its pre-leave level. For the insurer, therapeutic part-time work is a claims management tool: it shortens long absences and reduces transitions into disability, provided the policy specifies the cover and its duration.

Example

The 2019 French social security financing act removed, from January 1, 2019, the requirement of a prior full-time sick leave: an employee with a chronic illness can since move directly to compensated therapeutic part-time work.
