Maiden flight risk

Surcharge applied to a new launcher's first commercial flight, for lack of a reliability track record, statistically the most accident-prone period of its career.

Definition

Maiden flight risk refers to the surcharge applied to a new launcher's very first commercial flight, a period for which no reliability track record specific to that vehicle yet exists. Industry statistics show that launcher failure rates are structurally higher on their first flights than across a mature fleet, with design, integration or procedural flaws typically surfacing during the very first real-world attempts, under conditions ground testing cannot fully replicate. An insurer covering a satellite on a new launcher's first flight therefore charges a markedly higher premium than for a proven vehicle, and some operators prefer to delay launching their most valuable payload until the vehicle has accumulated a few successful flights. This risk then declines quickly with each additional successful flight, as the premium converges toward the general market rate once the launcher demonstrates its reliability. It illustrates the tension between the commercial appeal of launching early on a new, often cheaper vehicle, and the actuarial cost of a reliability still unproven.

Example

The maiden flight of the Ariane 5 launcher, on June 4, 1996, ended in self-destruction thirty-seven seconds after liftoff due to a guidance software error, destroying its payload and illustrating the elevated loss rate of a new launcher's very first flights.
